Volunteering at the Fratelli di San Francesco Community Kitchen

Civic engagement and social sustainability are also built through simple yet essential actions, capable of generating a real impact on people’s lives. In this spirit, the team took part in a volunteering activity at the Fratelli di San Francesco soup kitchen, an organization that has been operating in Milan since 1999 to support people experiencing vulnerability and social marginalization.

The soup kitchen represents one of the organization’s main services and welcomes hundreds of people every day, offering concrete support to those facing economic and social hardship. Thanks to the ongoing work of volunteers, staff, local institutions, and partners such as Banco Alimentare, this space is able to provide not only a hot meal, but also a point of reference within the city.

During our volunteering activity, we contributed to the lunch service, helping with the organization and distribution of food to the soup kitchen guests. The team was divided into several stations to ensure an efficient and welcoming service. This experience allowed us to closely understand the value of volunteering and the importance of organizations that work daily to combat social marginalization. In a context where sustainability is often exclusively associated with environmental issues, it is important to remember that there is also social sustainability, made up of inclusion, mutual support, and attention to the most vulnerable people.

Every act of solidarity has value. Volunteering experiences like this help strengthen the social fabric, enhancing the role of individuals, associations, and local networks that work every day to build a more cohesive, inclusive, and responsible community.
